“Getting recognized as a writer is hard enough but getting recognized as a children’s writer is even harder.” – Sharon C. Willams
You are a chemist and a writer; citizen of the two different worlds – fantasy and the real. How do you manage?
What a great question. So far I have not been using my background into my writings yet when it comes to chemistry. But the two do blend and has worked for me. Where I have used it is in how I approach any book. I am a firm believer in research and facts when it comes to any book let alone a children’s book. This is our chance to share and teach young minds. As a chemist I learned how to be methodical in how I did the experiments, how the labs were run and how I made the solutions for the various classes. That takes time, focus and a head to the details so you don’t get it wrong and end up hurting yourself.
That is how I do my research for any book. I make sure or do my best to fact check at least two times, if not three, each fact I have placed in my books even my children series. I look at it like an experiment what is my objective, what is my theory and how do I go about doing it to get the final conclusion. It is not chemistry that people might think but my frame of mind and how I was taught and have worked helps me I believe a better writer.
You are better known as the author of JASPER THE AMAZON BIRD. 3. What do you think easier? Writing for the adult readers or child readers?
Yes, that is a good point. Even though I have a comedy and an anthology of short stories that are 18+ people refer to me as Jasper’s mom and the series I have written for children. I think I could write a trilogy drama and people would still think of me as the writer of the Jasper series. I do like that. It shows people are paying attention and connect me in one portion of my writing career. I like that. It is nice to be known for something that has definitely been positive for me.

Life of humanity is full of events. Every day people experience something different from the previous one. Every day such things as passages of new bills, scientific discoveries, civil movements, crimes, diseases, concerts, accidents, and a lot of other events take place in life of people. Certainly, people are interested in what happens around them. Perhaps, it was the main reason for the appearance of news. It is evident that long ago, when people did not know about television and radio, news was spread gradually - from one person to another, from one village to another, from one city to another – and mainly, orally. Later, when scientists invented television, telephones, and radio, it became easier to spread the news. Evidently, that time became a time of appearance of such profession as journalist, whose aims were to gather, analyse, and tell people new information. During the whole history of life of humanity, the necessity to report news has not become out-of-date – people still want to know what happens in their lives and in lives of other people. Nevertheless, news reporting has been changing with time. In fact, it is not the same as it was years ago. “News is a phenomenon worthy of study because it is the pre-eminent way we understand our contemporary setting in all its diversity and complexity”. As it was mentioned above, the main sources of news reporting years ago were newspapers, television, and radio. The first source of news to appear was newspapers. Their history began, when Julius Caesar ordered to post a daily sheet of what happened in Rome. First newspapers of modern example were printed already in the 17th century, and became popular in the 18th century. Usually, they included three types of news – political, business, and economical. In the course of time, with the development of news reporting, newspapers spread the topics of news. New rubrics began to appear. Thus, newspapers wrote not only in abovementioned spheres, but also in spheres of medicine, sport, science, culture, education, and others. Newspapers prepared information on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Depending on this criterion, they reported about news, which took place during these periods of time. Two more popular ways of news reporting in times of our grandmothers and grandfathers were television and radio. These means of transferring news allowed people to know about last events in the country or in the world, while doing some housework, driving a car, or having a rest at home after working day. Thinking about these ways of news reporting in modern times one can confuse – people still use newspapers, television, and radio in order to find out about the events, which take place in the world. Nevertheless, two or three centuries passed since the time of the invention of these things. Thus, nowadays we can observe what actually changed in news reporting. The first thing, which led to changes in the sphere of news reporting, is the fact (which is approved by a great number of researchers) that “reading habits had changed; many readers began finding their news online”. At the same time, some people say that “reports of the death of newspapers are somewhat exaggerated”. Nevertheless, some changes happened – one cannot deny that the invention of the Internet influenced people’s habits. As people found it easier to read and watch the news online, economic situation in companies, which printed newspapers, became poor. This fact led to closing of newspapers, which existed for about 150 years. It is hard to imagine taking into account the fact that one day newspapers were considered being “more important to the country than the government itself”. In the 19th and the 20th century, newspapers took the first place in making people aware of what happened in the country they lived. Nevertheless, everyone can see how the attitude to this source of news reporting changed in present days. One of the factors, which led to this change, is the appearance of yellow journalism in the close of the 19th century. Newspapers began to attract attention of their readers by eloquent headlines and shocking articles. Nevertheless, this news was not always truthful. In spite of the fact that yellow journalism cannot be called a credible source of information, it found its own way of development. It is popular even nowadays, when it is referred to stories about celebrities and their lives. Certainly, not all of the newspapers were influenced by yellow journalism. One still can think of “The Times” in Great Britain or “The New York Times” in the USA as about quality newspapers. Unfortunately, nowadays the quality of newspapers attracts only few people. One more factor, which made newspapers less popular, was appearance of radio and television. These types of news reporting attracted people because they gave a possibility to know what one wants without spending a lot of time on it. It was easier to listen or to watch to the information instead of reading pages of news. Moreover, one could get information, while cooking, washing, ironing, or driving a car. It is evident that radio and television were more convenient ways of getting information. Although, people began losing an interest in reading newspapers, and gradually most of them were substituted by radio or television programs, it was not final changes. In the course of time, radio and television also became less popular. One should not think hard in order to understand the reason. Certainly, it is development of the Internet. Appearance of the world web changed people’s lives to a great extent. Therefore, it gave people a lot of possibilities. For instance, they could find their relatives from another countries with the help of social websites; moreover, they could make friends all over the world; furthermore, they could watch films and listen to music they like online; they could get any book they want; they could buy goods via Internet; and, of course, they could read, watch, and listen to news in the Internet. Actually, people still can do these things via Internet, and even more. While analysing the reasons of choosing the Internet as a source of news, researchers say that people used to buy papers such as The Chicago Tribune as a “seven day a week habit”. By the start of the 21th century, many consumers had got out of the habit. Fuller said that people bought papers such as Tribune when “something happens in the world”. The rest of the time, he said, “they tended to look for more convenient options such as the Internet”. The world web is extremely complicated system. Nevertheless, it is very comfortable in usage. Thus, people can find official sites of the newspapers there and read them where they want, because nowadays the Internet is available not only at home, but also in offices, in the Internet cafes, and even in numerous gadgets, which become more and more popular every day. Thus, if a person wants to get some information quickly, it is enough just to go online through smartphone, or another device, and find everything necessary. The Internet also gives a possibility to listen to radio and watch some TV channels online. Thus, the Internet supposes convenient provision of news at any time. Moreover, the world web helps people to make advertisements via Internet as soon as they need. Just imagine, how many time it will take to advertise in a newspaper or radio, and in the Internet. It is evident that modern people will choose the last variant for their advertising. Although, news became more convenient for people to get with the help of the Internet, this change had already led to some negative effects. First of all, a lot of journalists, editors, and publishers lost their jobs. As the demand for newspapers decreased and great number of newspapers had to end their existence, it led to such job losses. However, people, who worked in news reporting spheres, can find a new job in the Internet. As it is confirmed by people of this profession, “While there may be uncertainty about the future of traditional news platforms, one thing is for certain: good journalism, and good journalists for that matter, will always be in high demand”. Thus, they can work in online journals, newspapers, radio, or news programs. Hardly the humanity will be able to create something more powerful than the Internet, for at least, in the nearest time – “it will be until something better comes along to replace it”. Moreover, the Internet gives a possibility to be self-employed – it will help people to do what they want, not depending on someone. In my opinion, news reporting, as well as a lot of the other spheres of people’s lives, will soon become online. As it is confirmed by the research of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), “more than half of the population read newspapers online”. The same thing happens to TV news. If, at the end of the 20th century, people got information mostly from television, than nowadays the situation changed. Researchers suppose that in the nearest future celebrities will begin to create their own news pages in the Internet. The consequences will be the following. As news considering life of celebrities is authentic on their pages, people will not wait for news reports in order to get some information about what they already know. It will lead to irrelevance of news reporting on TV and radio, and, as a consequence, journalistic skill. People already can notice a tendency, which will lead to this event. The fact is that a lot of celebrities and politicians already have their blogs, where they write about last events of their lives, their thoughts, and their plans. This fact shows that predictions of researchers considering possible vanishing of news reporting as it is now are not vain. Taking into consideration the development of news reporting and its change with the time, the next conclusion can be made. Undoubtedly, news reporting is an essential part of people’s lives. It is impossible to imagine people, who are not interested in what happens in the world. Even if a person does not want to watch news, she/he will do it because being aware of the last events, which are considered being important worldwide, shows the level of personal development. Although, news reporting did not lose its significance for people, it changed. Certainly, people still read newspapers, listen to radio, and watch television, but they used to do it online. The Internet gives a possibility to get any information as easily and quickly as a person wants. On one hand, this way of getting information is convenient and refers to the demands of modern society. On the other hand, such quick transition from traditional ways of news reporting threats their existence. Moreover, it decreases the importance to prepare such specialists as journalists, editors, publishers, in such a way, making them less prestigious as they were earlier. Thus, the development of news reporting has its own strengths and weaknesses, and it is people’s choice – whether to accept these changes or struggle for traditions.
