A new great review for TALON, COME FLY WITH ME

As I read Gigi Sedlmayer’s ‘Talon, Come Fly With Me,’ the novel took me back to my elementary schooldays.

Back then at near the end of the teaching day at Meyers Elementary in Rialto, California, the teacher would get out a novel and read aloud to us. I loved those final 20 minutes in the classroom. That’s how I learned about Anne Frank, hearing the words of ‘Diary of Anne Frank’ read out loud to me. Those wonderful minutes as the classroom clock ticked down to 3 o’clock is why I have had a lifetime love affair with reading books.

Sedlmayer’s novel is one of those read-aloud books, perfect for a teacher to sit down in a chair before eager pupils and read for a few minutes each day. Not don’t misunderstand me. ‘Talon, Come Fly With Me’ is also a fun book for adults.

It’s a book that explores how physical differences can affect people’s views of others. My dad’s brother suffered Down syndrome when in the womb and was born with mental retardation. In restaurants and stores, people would sometimes stare at him. In Sedlmayer’s novel, her main character – a 9-year-old girl – isn’t mentally retarded. Matica’s trapped in a body of a 2-year-old, and will never grow as tall as other kids.

She lives in a remote village in the Andes of Peru, the daughter of Australian missionaries and schoolteachers. Due to her height handicap, Matica isn’t accepted by local Indians. She has no friends except for her little brother. She turns to an unlikely source for friendship – a pair of condors, a species facing extinction. They too face discrimination based on looks. They’re considered ugly birds by the Indians and even Matica’s father.

The condors and Matica forge a strong bond over the next two years. They’re extremely smart birds, and Matica is able to communicate with them as if they’re two additional brothers and sisters. They’re as smart as orangutans and bottlenose dolphins, the two smartest animals according to nature experts.

The plot centers on Matica’s efforts to help her condor friends save their egg from poachers. I don’t want to reveal too many details. I can say that Matica with help from her parents saves the egg and the condors allow her to keep it in her bedroom until it hatches. Many adventures lie ahead for Matica and her family as she helps the condors raise their hatchling.

I give Gigi Sedlmayer’s novel a thumb’s up. Her book is the first of a series.
