Are You Creatively Adapting To Future Business?

Attract The Right Job Or Clientele: As we reasonably deal with the Coronavirus, we are also in need of creatively adapting to future business. Our entire world around us is changing. Technology is leading the way for our new world ahead. The goal is to figure out better strategies for both our everyday life and business while remaining ahead of the curve. We can view the storm of change as a time to give up because it’s too overwhelming to continue. Or, we can delve into learning about our new era in the making. Our approach to learning and applying what we learn can be vastly different from the majority of people. Use the strategies that work best for you. The higher goal is to remain up to...

As easy as one-two-three

Today it was a good day.I finished the first draft of the Job from Hell.I finished the second draft of my historical non-fiction book.I mailed off the first of three historical articles I plan to write and sell this month. Of the three, the Job from Hell is the only one that is problematic – ghostwriting for a client that basically believes he knows better than me what this writing business is all about has meant wasted time, humiliations and a somewhat shell-shocked feeling on my part. Now I’ll tell the client the first draft is done, and he’ll tell me it’s not, and ask for changes that could easily be done during second draft…See what it’s doing to me? It’s very hard to live with this sort...

Tree Bark’s Role in the History of Books

Books are made up of several sheets of paper. I bet you knew that already. I bet you also know that the word ‘paper’ is derived from the word papyrus – a kind of paper made by the ancient Egyptians / Romans / Greeks. Papyrus is a reed-like plant found in North and Central Africa. It was relatively easy to dry papyrus reeds and weave the separate leaves into sheets for writing on. It did however make for rather bulky documents. In due course thinner, more flexible, sheets of paper, made from cellulose fibres in wood, came to replace papyrus. What you may not have known is that the word ‘book’ comes from Old Norse / Old English boc – meaning beech tree? In ancient times, in this part of the wo...

Reflections, June 2020

When I observe what is happening to America—the country I grew up in, that I was educated in, and that I served as a soldier—I am appalled. Anarchy, violence, looting. This is NOT the nation I know and love. This is an aberration, a disfigurement of our Republic. When I hear elected politicians threatening to desecrate the graves of Confederate soldiers, tear down statues and smash monuments to our past, what they are actually saying is they want to erase and rewrite America’s history. But history is indelible and permanent. It happened. You cannot change it to fit some 21st Century politically correct narrative. What you can do, is learn from it.   Abraham Lincoln, followed by President Uly...

Inteachán – Book Five: The Tallest Tower Crane 5: 36 ‘a broken tablespoon’

Imagine how long it would take to dismantle a length of iron railings with your bare hands? Or take down a wall of granite blocks with only a screwdriver? Cobblestones are reasonably easy to get up but what about doing just this for days and nights on end and the only tool you have is a broken tablespoon. Windows of any size are always simple to break but collecting all that broken glass with no gloves and bare feet is not a job that anyone would undertake unless forced to at gunpoint. Original link

My life as an explorer

Curiously enough, My life as an explorer is the title of two books, that were published in 1926 and in 1927. The 1926 one was by Sven Hedin, a man whose adventures in Central Asia are the stuff of legend, and the 1927 book was by Roald Amundsen, one of the greatest Arctic explorers. And I’ve read them both. The thing that strikes me is that both explorers had to be two of the most self-centered and egotistical individuals ever to walk the earth – and I find it quite funny that the books of these two world-explorers and adventurers end up being mostly about them and only tangentially about the places they visited and the people they knew.Fascinating reads, mind you, but somewhat spoiled by the...

Music Monday: “China Girl”

song-a-day-challenge-e1586987954193
Hi, everyone. We’re on Day 7 of the music challenge: a song that’s been covered by another artist. I chose “China Girl.” According to Gimme Danger: The Story of Iggy Pop, which I am presently reading, the song is about heroin addiction. That’s pretty far removed from the inter-ethnic love story portrayed by David Bowie’s music video. Here are both singer-songwriter Iggy Pop’s version and David Bowie’s cover for your consideration. “Alterni” Audiobook

The audiobook for “Alterni: The Alt-World Chronicles Book 1” is now available! Sommer Hines (yes, Sunshine and Sommer work together – lol) does an excellent job narrating the story, and I can tell you from listening to book 2 that she manages some pretty fantastic tricks with the ancient vampire voices. You won’t have to... Continue Reading →Original link

A Message from Police: America, We Are Leaving

Travis Yates is not one of my relatives, at least not one that I am aware of, but given the anarchy and insanity that is gripping and devastating our country today, I would be proud if he were. Yates is a cop in Tulsa, Oklahoma who has been ruthlessly attacked by the media because he has argued that systemic racism in American police departments doesn’t exist. He has referenced research by the National Academy of Sciences and others that back up his opinion. Of course, in today’s highly partisan and dishonest media, facts no longer matter. Or as Joe Biden likes to say: “We choose truth over facts.” In other words, don’t let facts get in the way of whatever you believe the truth is. Being “ri...

Inteachán – Book Five: The Tallest Tower Crane 5: 35 ‘a deadly blessing’

Two days later, the Minot Tower was finally destroyed and the debris rained down upon the toiling crowds like a deadly blessing. The group responsible for achieving this goal all perished in the collapse except for one (un)fortunate woman who was able to grab a handhold as the Tower fell. She hung from one arm for another sixteen hours before she too lost her grip and fell wailing to be impaled upon the railings. This death mattered for as long as it took the crowd beneath this woman’s fall to pull her body from the railings and place it in the park next door with all the other corpses so that they then could carry on uninterrupted with their toil. Is there a thing as too much volunteering?

I have a problem. That is the first step – admitting it. I definitely have a problem. And it isn’t that I can’t say no. It is that I love being involved. I love being involved in my kids’ schools and knowing what is happening. It is this love for volunteering and being involved that has led me to my current predicament. I now have 4 volunteer positions. Yep, you read that right. In addition to working part-time and writing a novel, I will fill the rest of my time with lots of volunteering. Middle School PTA This past school year, I was PTA President for the middle school. It has been a crazy year with the last fourth of it being done from home. That didn’t stop my volunteering, there was sti...

Can we get life to resemble fiction?

In crime fiction, we tend to portray the police as the good guys. Our characters are dedicated investigators bringing perpetrators of serious crime to justice. After all, that’s what our readers expect to find in a murder mystery. They’re not looking for stories of police brutality. Unfortunately, what we’re seeing in real life is examples of the police as perpetrators of violent crime. We’re seeing videos of police officers murdering people on the streets of America. We’re seeing footage of heavily armed officers brutally attacking peaceful #blacklivesmatter protesters with batons, rubber bullets, and tear gas.  It’s tempting to see what’s going on as an American problem. It’s not. It happe...

A page a day is a book a year #AuthorToolboxBlogHop

“You can learn only by doing.” ― Stephen King On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft I write a book a year, and have done for the past ten years. Some people tell me they would never have the time to write a book. I suspect the truth for many is they don't have confidence in their writing skills. Like any skill, writing a book takes time to learn. You wouldn't expect to pick up a musical instrument and play it well right away, but if you learn a new tune every day, you will soon improve. (I taught myself to play the flute with the ‘Tune a Day’ books.) Of all the writing advice I've ever seen, the one I recommend is the only way to learn to write is to just write, every day. The typical novel has ...

Are You Considering a Domestic Partnership Instead of Marriage? By Miss Know It All

Miss Know It AllMany couples wonder whether they should get married or just live together, but a domestic partnership may be another option. A Domestic Partnership is an interpersonal relationship between two individuals who live together and share a common domestic life, but are not legally married to each other or anyone else. People in domestic partnerships receive benefits that guarantee the right of survivorship, hospital visitation, and others; it provides protection for couples who are not legally married or part of a Civil Union. This agreement is suitable for all types of "Living Together" couples who are in a committed relationship. The definition of what is a domestic partnership ...
