Special Guest Post by Ellen Alpsten, Author of Tsarina

Available from Amazon UK and Amazon USSpring 1699: Illegitimate, destitute and strikingly beautiful, Marta has survived the brutal Russian winter in her remote Baltic village. Sold by her family into household labour at the age of fifteen, Marta survives by committing a crime that will force her to go on the run.’ The Forgotten Empress Never before has there been so much interest in female power, and female reign, be it historically, or in current politics. Literature and TV adaptations are no exception: ‘So, is it another novel about Catherine the Great?’ People asked about my epic debut ‘Tsarina’. Yet the two women bearing the same name, ruling the same country, in the same century, could ...

Going through the Second Barrage

A lot of online reviewers were less than kind with Black Lagoon‘s second season – called The Second Barrage. Most lamented the absence of Dutch and Benny from many episodes, the excessive focus on Rock and Revy’s “relationship”, and the less frantic action. So I was rather curious to see what it would look like. And to me it looks… quite interesting. To recap, Black Lagoon is an early 2000s anime/manga series set in the ’90s, and focusing on the day-to-day lives of a team of mercenaries, the Black Lagoon Trading Co., operating in the South China Sea. The first season follows four successive narrative arcs, throwing in a lot of firepower and an ample cast of supporting characters – including a...

I’m Sick of Being Silent

Black Lives Matter Post
I don’t know how many times I’ve said on this blog that “I try very hard not to be political here, but …” and then I say what I need to say. There aren’t going to be any more preambles when I say what I need to say. Yesterday, I left yet another group for romance writers. I didn’t do it with any fanfare, or statements like “I’m taking my pail and shovel and going home.” I shook the dust from my shoes and walked away. I’m sure I won’t be missed; I’m a not-quite-midlist author, for starters, and there are more than 7,000 people in that group. I’m not one of the cool kids. The decision was an easy one, after one of the members made the following statement in a discussion of whether or not to us...

My View of Looters: This is a Great, Great Country

When I observe what is happening to America—the country I grew up in, that I was educated in, and that I served as a soldier—I am appalled. Anarchy, violence, looting. This is NOT the America I know and love. This is an aberration, a disfigurement of our Republic. When I hear elected politicians threatening to desecrate the graves of Confederate soldiers, tear down statues and smash monuments to our past, what they are actually saying is they want to erase and rewrite America’s history. But history is indelible and permanent. It happened. You cannot change it to fit some 21st Century politically correct narrative. What you can do, is learn from it.  Abraham Lincoln, followed by President Uly...

DRAMA CLUB – The Coach (Part 2 of 3 Parts)

dontravis.com blog post #394 Theatrical Spot LightsLast week, Jarrod Gray got caught servicing a freshman in the lighting loft at Casa Verde College’s Thespian Hall. This week, we’ll see the price he has to pay for such shenanigans.***** THE DRAMA CLUB THE COACH Nothing happened for three days except that Bobby didn’t come around to bother him. On Friday, the drama coach sent for him. “Hello, Jarrod,” Thad Reid responded cordially to his knock. “Have a seat.” Jarrod sat and waited wordlessly. He was impressed by the coach’s cool. “I’m taking Bobby Lyles out of the booth and assigning him to sets, okay?” “Fine,” Jarrod said calmly. “Who are you sending upstairs?” “Let’s get through the first ...

Inteachán – Book Five: The Tallest Tower Crane 5: 38 ‘Sphere with Sphere’

The demolition of Trinity College also continued apace. The bronze globe that has sat outside Trinity’s Berkeley Library since 1982, Arnaldo Pomodoro’s ‘Sphere with Sphere,’ was worked loosed from its plinth and rolled across Front Square where it was then used as a wrecking ball to demolish Front Gate and splinter the wooden doors into firewood, crushing twelve people along the way. The fact that different versions of this same sculpture can also be found in the Vatican and the Headquarters of the United Nations was a wonderful irony not lost on the NotBeSpeak as they oversaw this perverse transformation from an existing artistic statement to a new statement of an altogether very different ...

New life for ‘Old School’ QR marketing

QRAmzApPWpng
Generally, my posts on ‘Ramblings from a Writers Mind’ focus on the art of creative writing, authorship and ‘being indie’. To help with such, I have published two books, ‘The Frugal Author‘ & ‘Lots of Author Stuff you Need to Know‘, both easily downloadable from Amazon. (See below for details) Rarely do I venture into posting about promotion and marketing as these are areas which deserve a blog of their own, allowing for comprehensive explanations and discussion. However, there are many simple elements authors can utilize to assist the sales of their books. Many of these aspects, like listing your ‘other titles’ as part of your books backmatter should be standard practice. Some mainstream pu...

How To Destroy America From Within

Inteachán – Book Five: The Tallest Tower Crane 5: 37 ‘a life of terminal servitude?’

You are probably asking why it is that the Defence Forces are so happy to go along with enforcing Terminal Transit without even a hint of rebellion or refusal but the simple truth is that in a world that no longer conforms to any conventional sense or reason or meaning there are only two real roles left, slave or enforcer. Faced with such a situation it is easy to see (but not necessarily forgive) why people would choose not to relinquish their enforcing. Any slave you asked would gladly do anything they possibly could to reverse their role, especially if it meant slightly more comfort for them and any family they might still have left. Would anyone willingly volunteer for a life of terminal...

Why friends have to quarrel?

Friendship is a kind of relationship. Two people are hanging out, sharing secrets, and keep each other’s back. Their characters are various and they raised in different surroundings. Yet, they complete each other and enjoy spending time together. Friendship breaks like a relationship. People split, they separate, and the result is, they don’t talk anymore. Sometimes, they don’t greet each other in the street. They start gossip with each other and it is possible that former friendship turns into an enemy zone.  Now, why this happened? Not that we hate our friends overnight. It is not we pretended liking and affection.  This is something else. Where do you mistake? I will help you with this. D...
