T is for Terry and the Pirates #AtoZChallenge

For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of comic strips. For those young ones out there, a comic strip is a few drawn panels telling a story which appears in the newspaper. The first daily comic strip began in 1907, but the color comics (Sunday funnies) actually began back in 1894.

If you are here looking for my typical Thursday post on writing or publishing, I will go back to my regular schedule in May. Until then, enjoy the A to Z Challenge…

T is for Terry and the Pirates. This action-adventure comic strip ran from 1934 to 1973. It was created by Milton Caniff. In 1946, Caniff won the first Cartoonist of the Year Award presented by the National Cartoonists Society. This is the same year that he left working on Terry and the Pirates. George Wunder then took over illustrating the strip.

The strip centers around Terry Lee, an American teenager, in China seeking a lost gold mine. He matches wits with pirates and other villains, including the Dragon Lady who later becomes an ally during World War II.
