Character Death in YA Fiction

I was asked recently if it was all right to have a character die in a teen novel. The question brought out memories of well-written novels over the past several decades where that happened. My response was short but very much on point…   Yes, you may kill off a character in a teen novel.   The reality of that situation, however, is far from easy. This isn’t a situation where you can suddenly decide a character that isn’t working out is about to die and do it in a manner designed to shock the reader. Nor is it a situation where you open the novel with a death, simply to grab the reader’s attention. Killing off a character must be carefully plotted and only used if there is no other ...

Happy Everybody Reads YA

And Alex -cover
Welcome to another ‘Happy Everybody Reads YA’ #SundayBlogShare. On Wednesday I’m guesting the sci/fi and horror writer, David Court, on my blog. I haven’t tried writing in either genre myself – yet! I’ve dabbled a little bit with fantasy (Sleeping Beauty, The Ghost Queen) but the nearest I’ve got to horror is a slightly spooky house in And Alex Still has Acne. One day maybe I’ll have a proper go at horror. Meanwhile here is a, not very horrifying, excerpt from And Alex …  Excerpt: They were standing now on the opposite side of the road to a particularly dilapidated house. Several of the windows were boarded up, and one of the upstairs ones was smashed. The downstairs ones were still int...

So who is this Valentine Bloke?

bunch-of-flowers
St Valentine – the chap responsible for expensive bouquets, sickly milk chocolate treats, cheesy cards, and a positive smorgasbord of romance themed publications. Not to mention, sulks and hurt silences in the households where his special day has been forgotten by that ‘significant other.’ Yes, everybody knows the 14th February is Valentine’s Day. Would it surprise you to know that Valentine himself had nothing to do with the passion for protestations of romantic love on this day? Would it surprise you further to know that  there were possibly two St Valentines? One a Roman priest turned Christian who was martyred in AD269. The other the Bishop of Terni who was also martyred. His feast ...

Happy Everybody Reads YA

Chains of magic
Hello and welcome to another ‘Happy Everybody Reads YA’ #SundayBlogShare. Today I’m sharing an excerpt from Chains of Magic, a short story that appears in The Food of Love – an anthology released by Solstice Publishing in time for Valentine’s Day in 2015. The Food of Love contains 10 short stories that are suitable for adult and YA readers. Moreover, each story is linked to a particular recipe – hence the title. Excerpt: Brabantio hesitated before entering his office. He had felt helpless to argue. Desdemona could be very persuasive when she wanted to be and, in truth, he really loved sticky fig pudding. He would have been lost without her to sort the dinner arrangements. But was it what his...

Doing A New Thing!

GREETINGS FROM THE SNOWY PACIFIC NORTHWEST Wow! It has been a LONG time since I posted anything here. So, to those of you who have been around, get ready for something new. For those of you just finding this place, get ready for something fun and inspiring. Several years ago, when I decided I could write a book, I realized I had absolutely NO idea what I was doing. Fast forward to the present and I still can't claim to be a professional on anything, but I do know a lot about a lot. What I don't know, I do know where to send you to find out. So (and you'll discover that 'so' is my favorite filler word), the plan is to share, inspire and amuse...essentially, to get your head in a space to cre...

Who IS the Fairest of All?

Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who's the fairest of them all? It's the lovely and talented Miss Marissa Meyer, of course. If you've been around Dream Weaver Novels on Blogger for any amount of time, you know I'm a HUGE fan of twisted fairytale author Marissa Meyer. I was so excited to meet her at a conference in Seattle a couple of years ago that I made a complete derp out of myself. And to put the cherry on the fangirl sundae, I asked to sit with her at dinner. Unfortunately, we ended up on opposite sides of the table from each other and could barely hear each other over the murmurs of all the other attendees around us. Dinner was served, but my eyes just kept wandering back to her lovely youn...

Mystery & Mayhem with Lorraine Adair

Thank you all for putting up with my melancholy, last week. We're all doing better now, but still miss the boy incredibly. Thanks to those of you who reached out with warm thoughts. And now...on with the show. A Stuck Record Yeah, yeah! I know I always say it, but I am truly excited to bring you this week's author. Lorraine was one those 'true fans' writers adore. She read my books, and without my knowledge or request, she posted links to them on Twitter, touting her 5 star review. I had to send her my thanks. We began corresponding and soon became friends. Then, I read her book, Ambient Light . I was blown away. This was Lorraine's first book, but she writes like a seasoned pro, so of cours...

Darkness Falls on Dream Weaver Novels

Hi all. Normally, I have a chipper note or a fun interview for you. And I know that a lot of you who check in here are true fans of my books. Out of all my characters, the one with the most fan response has been the little beagle pup, Eddyson.  So, it is with a heavy heart that I share this sad news with family, friends and fans of Dream Weaver Novels. The beagle pup in the books, Eddyson, was largely based on my own sweet boy Dyson. Eddy and Dyson (notice the overlap of their names) kind of grew up together and I tried to weave the antics of the real pup into the fictional one. All that said to say this: I posted on Facebook several weeks ago that Dyson was diagnosed with stage 3 lymphoma. ...

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Cue Jeopardy Music... Doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo....OK so I'm just being a little silly. But don't we all sometimes need a little silliness in our day to cut through the boredom or anxiety? Even the Bible tells us "A merry heart does good like a medicine." Don't believe in God or the Bible? How about "Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face." (Victor Hugo) Or "A day without laughter is a day wasted." (Charlie Chaplin) So laugh away! I Know Why You're Here After recoloration, this was the base image for Rock Star I know most of you who drop by are here to read about a new indie author and their books. And occasionally I give you the run down on a great site I found for i...

WHO'S YOUR TOP REFERRING SITE?

Happy Fall, Everyone! I know I said that last time, but I am still, and hope to always be, fascinated with the beauty of Autumn. I ask myself how I can paint a picture of words to describe the colors, the weather, the starkness that heralds winter. Because, isn't that the job of a writer? To paint a picture with words? And sometimes, I have to wonder if Fall appeals to my dark side as trees and flowers turn skeletal and dark. Any of you got any great word pictures of Fall? We'd love to hear them! Leave a comment below. This Week's Guest Close to 2 years ago, I posted an interview on Dayna L Cheser's blog, and to this day, that site is my biggest referral site here to Dream Weaver Novels on B...

So, without further ado...I present:   Miss Ta...

FREE PROMO FOR DREAM WEAVER?

Fall's a-Fallin'! Howdy ya'all! I hope your Fall is going well. I'd bet the trees back in the east of the US are starting to turn amazing colors. Not so much here in Spokane, WA. Just a little nip from old Jack Frost. Summer is my favorite season, and then Fall, because of the city turns all shades of red, gold, orange and brown. Reminded me of this:  (excerpt from Dream Weaver) Trees wore shimmering nacreous cloaks that rivaled the grandeur of their summer dress greens and fall’s autumnal oranges, reds and yellows.   Feel free to post your pics of fall in your neighborhood! I'd love to see them!! I do have some exciting news to share! For those of you haven't gotten a copy of my books for w...

Of course, I followed the link, and discovered that Dream Weaver took Bronze in the Young Adult Paranormal Fiction category. Woot woot!! So now it's official...Dream Weaver is now an award winning novel!     Now, On With the Show... If I remember right, I discovered this week's visitor from a daily email I receive with ...
