The Professor Dunne Mysteries – The Simple Matter of the Elusive Illusionist

The Professor Dunne Mysteries © Barnaby Taylor 2018 – All Rights Reserved Professor Patricia Dunne is a silent film historian and amateur detective. This is the story of her adventures. The Simple Matter of the Elusive Illusionist Chapter 1 September the Eighth is the feast-day of Our Lady in Dublin and Professor Patricia Dunne never missed the chance to attend the ceremony that was held in the Whitefriars Street Carmelite Church. In case you’re wondering, the simplest way to get there is to come out of the Front Gate of Trinity College and walk straight ahead. Keep going until you reach the bottom of South Great George’s Street. Here you should turn left and walk up the hill. Carry on past ...

Am I Bad Enough to be Good?

Virginia+Woolf
I didn’t know until recently that some publishing houses that are inserting ‘morality clauses’ into their contracts, a phenomenon that has apparently been growing since the rise of the #MeToo movement. Publishers, it seems, are worried that if a writer is found to have behaved badly, it will affect not just sales of their own books, but the whole publishing house. Nicola Solomon, of the Society of Authors, is worried. She cites one publisher warning an author against any acts that indicate ‘moral turpitude.’ That is, they must avoid upsetting the accepted standards and feelings of the community through their life-style, or they won’t get a contract.  This despite the desire to shock the read...

VIRO – ‘Absolutely thrilling’

Hi Everyone VIRO has just received another FIVE STAR review and I thought I would share it with you. The review is from fourteen year-old JP and really captures what I was trying to achieve with the book. I am delighted that the book is reaching people and making them respond so positively. ‘Absolutely thrilling. I loved every page more than the previous, to the point that I couldn’t stop reading. Jake, a unique and curious character with good intentions. Ellis, the cunning and loyal girl who sees that Jake is different. Abe, brave but not so bold. Amber, intent on getting the Job done the quickest way possible. These four kids make their way through a zombie infected place they used to call...

Planning a launch.

anthcov2
When my writers’ group put together an anthology recently we planned a launch for the beginning of March. We: Ordered extra copiesBooked a table in a local bookshop (who put the date in their Facebook calendar)Talked about it on our own blogs, Facebook Twitter etc.Mentioned it (more than once) to friendsOrganised a press releaseHad a slot on local radioPut the date in our own diaries to make sure we turned up to do our stint on the sales. What could possibly go wrong? Well, the weather could! On the Friday it snowed. And snowed … By Saturday morning roads were impassable so the bookshop owner couldn’t get in to open his shop, and most of us couldn’t get there anyway for the same reason. All ...

Top Tips for Being a Better Independent Publisher – Number One

output_zW0yIK
Hi Everyone We are quite literally inundated with lists of tips in their fives and tens and twenties about how to be better at things and how not to do things so badly. Inspired by this avalanche of tips I thought I would offer some top tips of my own. Here is my top tip for today. Despite All Appearances to the Contrary The World is Still Full of Strangers We are an optimistic bunch and for the most part we have come to believe that the proliferation of digital technology has made the world a smaller place. Not only that, this same technology has also brought people together in ways that we have never seen before. This is of course true but this does not mean that our lives are enriched in ...

Fame – a poisoned chalice for a writer?

Sathnam
Sathnam Sanghera, is a journalist who writes regularly for the London Times. He has also written a book – The Boy With The Topknot. A Memoir of Love. This is about his experience of growing up in working class Wolverhampton with his immigrant parents, and siblings. The book was recently made into an acclaimed film for television. So you could say he is a writer who is definitely on the foothills of fame, if not yet a household name, or a familiar face on screen. In one of his recent short pieces for The Times he wrote about walking through London with the Bollywood star, Anupam Kher, who played his father in the film. Such is the actor’s fame that a fifteen minute walk to a shoe shop took ov...

Crime, taxis, and writing YA novels

Taxi
Across the world, taxi drivers provide a great service: ferrying people to and from airports and hospitals, driving people home after parties so that they can drink a glass of wine or three without worrying about being over the limit, helping – as I have witnessed – old ladies back to their homes after a shopping expedition (and even ensuring the food gets put into the fridge and freezer before they leave). They put up with anti-social hours, reduction in sperm count (so I’m told – it’s all that sitting), and quite a lot of verbal (and sometimes physical) abuse from inebriated passengers. But there have been a number of articles in the paper recently pointing out the sinister role some taxi ...

Did she go up or down the aisle?

Meghan
A break from blogging for a short holiday turned into something rather longer as my 95 year old mother became very ill following a stroke. She died on Saturday 19th May, so I missed the televising of that ‘wedding of the year’ between an American actress and an English prince. Being otherwise occupied beforehand I also largely missed the controversy over who would walk Meghan down the aisle. But I subsequently heard about the debate over whether she should be ‘walked up’ or ‘walked down’ the aisle. The London Times referred to her being ‘walked down the aisle’ to the altar, only to have several readers argue that she would have to be ‘walked up’ the aisle to her fiancé and would then ‘walk d...

Two Top Writing Tips I Learned This Week

Hi Everyone Today I want to mention some advice I was given about improving my presence online on sites like Goodreads . I discuss this more in my video above and on my YouTube channel but ultimately the first top tip I was given was that if you want to be taken more seriously as a writer then you need to present yourself more seriously as a reader. Goodreads is a great resource for authors to get involved with but only if you are prepared to use the platform for what it was intended for. It is not enough to just post all YOUR book-related stuff on your profile – you know; your books, their editions, the covers, and any trailers or other related wares – and then expect people to engage with ...

How Do You Write? – A Brand-New YouTube Series

How do you write_ FRONT TITLES (1)
Hi Everyone Clearly because I have nothing better to do with my time, I have decided to launch a brand-new  series on my YouTube channel called ‘How Do You Write?’ In each episode I will be sharing some thoughts on how I write. I will also be joined from time to time by special guests who will be talking about how they write. I currently have two episodes uploaded to YouTube and if you are interested here they are. If you sit through them both you’ll see that Episode 2 is a bit slicker than Episode 1. That’s fine, I like to think it says something about the writing journey. In any case, you can’t upload newer, revised versions of videos on YouTube, only delete them, so I took the decision to...

Tags and #Tags

tag
Most people who use social media, know what tags are on Twitter etc. and use them to attract more followers. I will, no doubt, add a few tags to this post to advertise it and maybe encourage a few more readers to follow my blog. Tags, when you are writing away from social media, are a bit different. These are short, questioning phrases, at the end of an affirmative or negative statement. Such as the cheery – “It’s cold today, isn’t it?”  as you hurry pass a neighbour in the street. Or the more hectoring – “You won’t do anything silly whilst I’m away, will you?” from a busy mother to a recalcitrant teenager. Tags are regularly used in dialogue. Their aim is for the speaker to confirm that the...

YouTube and the Horror of Seeing Yourself not only in Inglorious Technicolor but also as the World Sees You

Hi Everyone I posted my first YouTube update the other day. It felt horrendous. Awful. I have always hated hearing the sound of my own voice. Combine that with seeing yourself as well and all the horrors I have ever felt about myself fell full upon me from a great height. But it is done now. Out there. Uploaded. Online. Too late. And there will be more. Have a nice day. Original link
