Online Extortion Scams Increasing During the COVID-19 Crisis

The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has seen an increase in reports of online extortion frauds, especially among singles using dating apps, during the current "stay-at-home" orders due to the COVID-19 crisis. Because large numbers of the population are staying at home and likely using the computer more than usual, scammers may use this opportunity to find new victims and pressure them into sending money. The scammers are sending e-mails threatening to release sexually explicit photos or personally compromising videos to the individual's contacts if they do not pay. While there are many variations of these online extortion attempts, they often share certain commonalities.Fraud COMMONAL...

DRAMA CLUB – The Coach (Part 3 of 3 Parts)

dontravis.com blog post #395Let me get another little matter out of the way before we start on the Drama Club. I finished my 7th BJ Vinson mystery a couple of weeks ago—The Cutie-Pie Murders. Needs one final read-through before submitting to Dreamspinner Press. Wish me luck. Now back to the Drama Club. Jarrod’s punishment for getting lost cost him the mattress he had in the loft. Of course, that didn’t stop Bobby from coming around for a second helping. I don’t know about you, but I sense an increasing awareness of Thad Reid the drama coach on Jarrod’s part. Wonder what happens this week. *****THE DRAMA CLUBTHE COACHJarrod was impressed by Mr. Reid’s audition technique. He not only had the ac...

DRAMA CLUB – The Coach (Part 2 of 3 Parts)

dontravis.com blog post #394Theatrical Spot LightsLast week, Jarrod Gray got caught servicing a freshman in the lighting loft at Casa Verde College’s Thespian Hall. This week, we’ll see the price he has to pay for such shenanigans.*****THE DRAMA CLUBTHE COACHNothing happened for three days except that Bobby didn’t come around to bother him. On Friday, the drama coach sent for him.“Hello, Jarrod,” Thad Reid responded cordially to his knock. “Have a seat.” Jarrod sat and waited wordlessly. He was impressed by the coach’s cool. “I’m taking Bobby Lyles out of the booth and assigning him to sets, okay?”“Fine,” Jarrod said calmly. “Who are you sending upstairs?”“Let’s get through the first product...

Are You Considering a Domestic Partnership Instead of Marriage? By Miss Know It All

Miss Know It AllMany couples wonder whether they should get married or just live together, but a domestic partnership may be another option. A Domestic Partnership is an interpersonal relationship between two individuals who live together and share a common domestic life, but are not legally married to each other or anyone else. People in domestic partnerships receive benefits that guarantee the right of survivorship, hospital visitation, and others; it provides protection for couples who are not legally married or part of a Civil Union. This agreement is suitable for all types of "Living Together" couples who are in a committed relationship. The definition of what is a domestic partnership ...

DRAMA CLUB – The Coach (Part 1 of 3 Parts)

dontravis.com blog post #393  Hope the reader who prompted me to write something about the pandemic enjoyed my story, COVID Closet. Doubtless he’ll let me know soon enough. The last I heard from him after the prior installment is that I was a “tease.” Okay, I admit it. I am.I’ve had some requests for more of Jarrod Gray and the Drama Club at Casa Verde College, In earlier posts, we’ve seen Jarrod with the football rough who thought he could dominate, with Kahn, the lithe Asian with whom Jarrod could have fallen in love, and with the Chameleon. Alas, they only last so long as they are in college. This year, it’s Jarrod’s senior year, so he’s the one who’ll be leaving at the end of the term. S...

COVID Closet (Part 2 of 3 Parts)

dontravis.com blog post #391Courtesy of pexels.comDoes it seem a little chilly in the frat house to you? It does to me. Well, let’s see what happens next.*****COVID CLOSET          The first two days weren’t too bad. Bruno nearly wore out his iPhone talking to everyone he knew while the queer kept to himself. The kid was quiet as a dormouse. That suited Bruno just fine.          But by day three, that was old hat. He filled the next eight hours playing computer games, twelve sleeping or catnapping, one in the weight room, and three doing things he didn’t even remember. He figured his mistake came on day four. He began thinking about his last night with “the former Cherry.” That’s the way he ...

COVID Closet (Part 1 of 3 Parts)

dontravis.com blog post #390  Courtesy of Pixabay.comAfter the little ditty about Zack and Zel, it’s time to return to a proper short story. You can thank my reader (and friend) from Palm Springs for the following story. In an email exchange one day, he mentioned that all this social lockdown stuff might provide material for a story. So here you have it. Blame him; not me.*****COVID CLOSET          Bruno Hadley fought to keep his voice calm. “What do you mean I can’t leave?”          The college provost looked comical decked out in full protective gear, including one of those powder blue gowns. His navy pantlegs sticking out below the hem were capped by wood-brown leather oxfords. The idiot ...

FEATURED AUTHOR: R.G. BELSKY

ABOUT THE BOOK Martin Barlow was Clare Carlson's first newspaper editor, a beloved mentor who inspired her career as a journalist. But, since retiring from his newspaper job, he had become a kind of pathetic figure—railing on about conspiracies, cover-ups, and other imaginary stories he was still working on. Clare had been too busy with her own career to pay much attention to him. When Martin Barlow is killed on the street one night during an apparent mugging attempt gone bad, it seems like he was just an old man whose time had come. But Clare—initially out of a sense of guilt for ignoring her old friend and then because of her own journalistic instincts—begins looking into his last story idea...
