Authors and President of The Wild Rose Press in HyannisAnother wildly busy month is over...somehow October always flies by, which is a shame since as a fan of all things spooky, it's my favorite month!  Our weekends were filled with events--all fun ones, thankfully.  We had Parents' Weekend at UNH for our college kid, a 30-year-reunion at the Coast Guard Academy for my husband's class of 1989, a long girls' weekend away to Seattle with my BFFs (we all turned 50 this year and went to visit the one friend who ended up on the West Coast, since she always comes to us), a visit to a historic lighthouse and home now owned by the Coast Guard (a property that once included a small-pox hospital--book...

The Origins of #Halloween #Halloween19 #HappyHalloween #Paranormal

The month of October conjures up images of turning leaves, hayrides, pumpkins, scarecrows, black cats, and of course Halloween decorations.  I love learning about the origin of the holidays we celebrate, so I did a bit of (admittedly rudimentary) research to discover some of the reasons we dress up and try to scare each other on October 31st. Originally known as All Hallows’ Eve, Halloween is linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain.  This last day of autumn was considered the time of year when the barrier between the paranormal and physical worlds grew thin.  The Christian holiday of All Saints’ Day (All Hallows) also influenced Halloween.  It was said that the souls awaiting release on Nov...

The Haunting of Hillwood Farm WON! #RONE Best #Paranormal #Ghosts #Romance #RONE2019 Awards #Books

The long weekend was great for a lot of reasons--my college kid was home, we did family stuff both nights despite the horrible weather, and I had a lunch date with the president of my publishing company and some other local Cape Cod authors who write for the company.  And then, after a movie with the family on Saturday night, we were settling in to watch a TV show and I got a FB notification from an author friend:  "Congrats on the RONE Award!"  My heart did a cautious dance as I read it over a few times and responded "Wait, WHAT?"  I told my family to stand by as I tried to figure out if I was reading and interpreting the message correctly.Turns out, I was-- The Haunting of Hillwood Farm WO...

The Curse of #TheExorcist ~ #Paranormal Postings #Halloween #horror

I often blog about haunted places and spooky themes, since I write a lot of ghost mysteries into my novels.  Not surprisingly, I love October, because I’m a big fan of everything paranormal—books and movies especially. While I do read horror, the paranormal novels I write aren’t designed to fit into that genre. I aim to create mysterious, spooky, and suspenseful (but not gory) ghost stories. Thankfully, many readers have claimed certain scenes sent chills down their spine, which is exactly the kind of reaction I intend (and I include romance as well to heat things back up). Many have also said they stayed up all night reading one of my books--hopefully that was because they couldn’t put it d...

Exploring #Truro for #Book 7! #CapeCod #Travel #ghosts #romance #amwriting

Spectacular view from the Pamet Cranberry Bog TrailTruro, MASometimes I get my inspiration from a place, like when I visited the Old Jailhouse and came up with the idea for Haunted Souls.  And sometimes I decide on the setting first...and on a few occasions, some very odd coincidences have made me believe I made the right choice.  Like when I decided my debut novel, Silver Lake, was going to be set in Connecticut, in a lake district outside of NYC.  In particular, I knew I was basing my fictional lake on some of the lakes surrounding Candlewood Lake.  Having never been there, I was a little nervous about this, but I had a good reason for choosing the location.  I started reading books on the...

Full Moon on #Fridaythe13th! ~ Why It's Rare + Extra-Spooky! #Friday13th History #Superstitions #FullMoon #Triskaidekaphobia

For fans of all things spooky, it doesn't get much more exciting than a Friday the 13th coinciding with a nationwide full moon...an occurrence that hasn't happened since 2000, and won't happen again until 2049!  A September full moon is known as the harvest moon, meaning it's the closest to the autumnal equinox on Sept. 23rd.  As someone who writes paranormal romantic suspense, usually involving desperate ghosts and mysterious hauntings, it's reason to celebrate.  Plus, you know, it's Friday! I embraced the number 13 long ago, since it is the date of my birth, and there have been many years (including this one, in January) that my birthday fell on a Friday the 13th!   A fear of the number 13...

The Final #FirstDayofSchool Photo ~ #BacktoSchool Where Did the Time Go? #MomLife

First day of Kindergarten and first day of Senior Year!Same tree in the background...I had a cherry blossom treein my yard growing up that I loved to climb (those werethe days) and this tree was my first Mother's Day presentwhen we moved to Cape Cod and bought a house.I'm struggling this week, having to confront the fact that yesterday I took the final "Back-to-School" photo of my younger son heading into senior year.  I really don't understand where the time has gone!  Of course, I hope he'll go "back to school" to college many times in the next few years, but it's not the same as having them leave from our house after breakfast, juggling their backpack, lunch, and clothes for practice. It b...

Jumping Off the #Jaws Bridge! Visiting #MarthasVineyard #Edgartown #OakBluffs #CapeCod

My younger son in mid-jump off the "Jaws Bridge" on MV.Beneath him landing in the water is my nephew.Living on Cape Cod, we always have busy summers filled with visitors.  This August, we had back-to-back guests for two weeks--our best friends, and then my brother and sister and their families.  I've done posts in the past on some of our favorite places to visit with guests, but we also always try to fit in one or two new things.  Yesterday, we finally got my sister and her young kids to Martha's Vineyard, which has never worked out in the past due to the age of her children and the logistics of getting everyone onto a ferry on time to head over to this beautiful island off the Cape.In addit...

My Teen is Reading Again! #Books for Boys #amreading #YA

My son reading one of the ASOIAFbooks on the London tube during a 2016 tripHands down, reading is my favorite pastime, and I love books so much, I write them as well.  I've always tried to get my two sons into reading, with varying results.  My younger son, who is now 17 (!!!!) was always the bigger reader, but they both could be hooked with a really great story.  The problem is, I can't always find those really compelling novels that will pull them in immediately.  And because I'm an author, they know terms like "the hook", "the conflict", "the author's voice", etc.  It's hard to argue if they tell me they can't connect with the characters or the pacing is slow.  So, five years ago, I start...

5* #Review! "Passion...past hurts...Brilliant" Reunion #Romance + #Ghost Mystery #FridayReads #Paranormal

Sharing a review of Silver Lake I *LOVE* from the Nom de Plume Book Review site!  This book has a special place in my heart, as it was my debut novel and I lived with the characters and the plot growing in my imagination for years before I decided to try to write it.  Then I spent years editing and revising it until I received my first publishing contract (December 16, 2011...not that the date is seared in my brain or anything :) )Silver Lake is a reunion romance and ghost mystery...a story of second chances, painful secrets, friendship, loss, and the desire to solve a five-year-old disappearance, even in the face of frightening paranormal activity.  I've pulled out a few favorite quotes (I ...

Bathroom Makeover ~ From 90s Mauve to #FarmHouse Coastal! #FixerUpper Style Cape Cod #Remodel

So thrilled with how it all came together!  Wall color is Hale Navy. After months of delays, the glass for our master bathroom shower was just installed, which means the entire remodel is officially DONE!  I couldn't wait to post the pics of the bedroom, so they're already up, but now I can share the bathroom pics as well. One of the things I asked to have toremind me of my grandparents...forreason I always like this painting, andif the medium was right, so did myGrandma Renie.I can't find any before pics, which is a relief...it was just as bad as the master bedroom in both decor and design.  For one thing, I still had the ratty (but frequently washed) shower curtain from our first house...I c...

Tornadoes and Sharks...Just Summertime on Cape Cod #CapeCod #tornadoes

*Free use photo -- not the actual Cape tornadoI've lived on Cape Cod for twenty years now, and the summertime shark influx has been an ongoing annual occurrence since about 2009.  Before that, the Cape didn't have a lot of reports of Great White sharks (despite the fact that the 1975 hit movie Jaws was filmed on Martha's Vineyard...view a few pics of local settings in this post).  The first time I really remember hearing a lot about sharks here was in 2004, when a 15-foot Great White shark became somewhat stuck in a body of water near Wood's Hole.  That shark drew tons of attention, a lot of curious boaters, and became the first Great White tagged with a satellite tracking device in the Atla...
