History of St. Valentine's Day ~ #ValentinesDay #Valentines2020 #romance

Valentine's Day is almost here, and in the tradition of dedicating my blog to a bit of history about certain holidays and traditions, I decided to look into the facts behind St. Valentine and the reasons we celebrate love and romance on February 14th.  Turns out, there is quite a bit of conflicting information regarding this particular saint and the holiday named for him. Disclaimer: as always, please keep in mind I am a romance author, not a historian!  The name Valentine comes from the Latin word "valens" which means healthy or strong.  The derivation Valentine was a popular name between the 2nd and 8th centuries AD, which could explain part of the confusion surrounding this saint.St. Vale...

My Favorite Reads of 2019 ~ #amreading #books #FridayReads #Kindle

Time for my annual round-up of my favorite reads of 2019!  As the term "annual" suggests, I do this every year, or at least I have for as long as I've been blogging.  I tend to get most of my book recommendations from suggestions, whether it's from a friend, social media, or a list, so I like to share my own list each January.According to Goodreads, I read (and listened to) a total of 36 books this year.  Not too bad considering writing and editing my own books takes a lot of time.  I'm thrilled my own 2019 release, The Haunting of Hillwood Farm, has made it onto best book lists or won awards this year at five different review sites!  If you enjoy romantic suspense and/or ghost mysteries, I ...

#Authors...Need More #Reviews? Join the Winter Games Event! #writerslife #writingcommunity #amwriting

Winter Games begins Feb. 1!Consumers often rely on reviews when making purchases...I know I do!  And on retail sites, products--including novels--with more reviews usually receive the most visibility in searches.  A reader can't even consider choosing a title they've never even seen or heard of, and the book market gets more crowded by the day.  A new title gets added to Amazon approximately every five minutes. On Amazon, the largest online retailer for e-books with 88.9% of the market (Bloomberg), only about 5 to 10% of consumers leave reviews after a purchase.  Everyone is busy, and I know even if I love a product, I often never get around to leaving a review.  (One of my resolutions is to ...

History of #Christmas Traditions: #StNick, Reindeer, + Trees #ChristmasEve #MerryChristmas

The writer in me loves looking into the origins of our holidays and celebrations, so for the Christmas season, I'm dedicating this post to St. Nick, reindeer, and the decorating of trees.  As usual with my origins/history posts, I'll do my disclaimer that I'm an author, not a historian, but I'm used to doing thorough research for my novels!  Obviously, St. Nick is a well-known figure associated with the Christmas holiday.  While most people are familiar with the story of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem, though, many are unaware of how a 4th century Bishop influenced the legend of Santa Claus.St. Nicholas of MyraSaint Nicholas, or Nikolaos of Myra, was a bishop in an ancient town in Lycia--now Dem...

Holiday #Recipe ~ Rosemary Nut Mix #homemade #gifts #HappyHolidays #amblogging #food

I am not a crafty person.  I’m creative, in terms of dreaming up plot twists and developing characters, but the closest I usually get to designing gorgeous gifts or beautiful centerpieces is adding pictures I love with instructions I probably can’t follow to my Pinterest boards.  I’m in awe of people who have that kind of talent. But I can follow simple recipes—emphasis on simple—and a few years ago, my sister-in-law, who always hosts Christmas with a dazzling display of gourmet foods and stunning decorations, served a nut mix that I just couldn’t get enough of.  And hey, it’s nuts—a good-for-you food, packed with protein, omega 3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.  Even with ...

I'm a Featured Favorite Author on A #Soccer Mom's #Book Blog! #soccermom #reviews

Excited my pub made a few small changesto the original cover, including addingmy new USA TODAY Bestseller status! When my first novel, Silver Lake, came out in August of 2012, I didn't sleep for a week.  What would my friends and family think of my debut novel?  Would anyone else want to read it, beyond people I knew?  Would any book bloggers or review sites select it for review, and if they did, what would they say?  After spending 3 and 1/2 years writing, revising, and submitting to publishers, it was nerve-wracking to put something I'd worked so hard on out into the world...but I wrote it to hopefully entertain readers--and that's still why I write--so I knew I just had to cross my fingers...
